The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden was a formal Georgian garden in the 1700s. A picture, which hangs in the entrance hall, attests to this.

The planting we see today owes a lot to previous owners of the Hall, the Hawgoods and the Cassels. We have added to the planting but in essence tried to keep to the theme of a cottage garden described by Alan Titchmarch as ‘a tapestry of colourful blooms’.

It is wonderful to think that William and Dorothy Wordsworth and John Ruskin walked through these gardens so many years ago.

Alongside the roses, tree lupins and other perennials are the Rhus/stag’s horn sumach trees, which are of year round, interest. Along the northwest corner of the garden is a scrambling white wisteria. In June the borders are dominated by the huge oriental poppies whilst in September the iridescent blue globes of the echinops take centre stage.
